Human Rights

Human Rights and Community Empowerment:

Everyone's human rights are protected by law - but human rights are not just about lawyers and courtrooms. The Human Rights Act means that you can defend your rights and the rights of your community or service-users here and now.

Public organisations are required to treat everyone equally, with respect and with proper regard to their dignity as a human being. Community Network member groups provide services and advocate for some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in our local community - for example older peeople, people with physical or learning disabilities, people from minority communities. It's important that as voluntary, community and faith groups we are aware of how we can use human rights concepts to protect our communities from poor service and discrimination.

If you would like to know more about how you can use human rights in your everyday work, or on specific cases - contact Liberty, BiHR or the Commssion for Equality and Human Rights - see the links on the right.
